Reflecting on a successful OBSERVE clustering workshop at #SP25! 💡

On Friday, 10 October, the OBSERVE clustering workshop “Data & tools for decarbonisation of the European building stock” took place in Milan as part of Sustainable Places 2025, gathering key experts and EU projects to discuss how data and digital tools can accelerate Europe’s transition towards a decarbonised, smarter building stock.

Co-organised by Demo-BLog, OBSERVE, OpenBEP4EU, Building Renovation Passports, and LEGOFIT, the workshop highlighted the vital role of digital building logbooks, data interoperability, and innovative calculation engines in supporting renovation strategies and next-generation Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).

🔍 Key discussion points

  • National EPB databases and data frameworks enabling better decision-making for building performance
  • Digital renovation passports as tools to guide homeowners and professionals through the renovation journey
  • Common challenges and synergies across EU-funded initiatives to foster collaboration and alignment with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)
  • Opportunities for data-driven policymaking, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and measurable impact across Europe’s building sector

🤝 A collaborative path forward

The session encouraged strong interaction between participants, underlining the importance of cross-project collaboration and shared data ecosystems to unlock the full potential of digitalisation in the construction and renovation landscape.

A big thank you to all the speakers, project representatives, and attendees for your contributions and enthusiasm. Your insights are helping to shape the future of energy-efficient, data-driven renovation in Europe. 🌱

Integrating Energy Performance and Smart Readiness Indicator: Insights from assessors

SmarterEPC surveyed 25 building performance assessors to test the integration of Energy Performance Certificates with Smart Readiness Indicator assessments. The SmarterEPC methodology promises to streamline building audits under the revised EPBD, but assessors emphasise the need for clearer criteria, practical training, and digital tools to ensure successful implementation across Europe. The state of the EPCs in Italy: progress and challenges

The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), introduced in Italy in 2005 with the 2002 EPBD Directive, is a fundamental tool for building management for owners, operators, and institutions alike. Aside from the benefits, what is the current state of EPCs in Italy? Every year, ENEA publishes a report on EPCs to analyze the state of the art of this certification, which is still not fully exploited in all its potential.

Some news from ENEA

Over the past months, ENEA has been contributing to the OBSERVE project by supporting the development of a structured assessment approach to describe national building data ecosystems and inform the definition of national Building Stock Observatories (nBSO) archetypes and their key functional building blocks. ENEA has been actively involved in stakeholder engagement activities, including the collection and evaluation of inputs from national stakeholders and European policymakers. These efforts help improve the understanding of institutional needs and current practices related to
