Special Session: Advanced Design and Retrofit Solutions for a Decarbonized and Climate-Resilient Built Environment under the New EU Policy Framework (EPBD, EED and RED)

Paris Fokaides, Frederick University, Cyprus, is presenting SmarterEPC innovations for retrofitting solutions at the 11th International Conference On Smart And Sustainable Technologies (Splitech) in Split – Bol, Croatia. 

Special Session “Advanced Design and Retrofit Solutions for a Decarbonised and Climate-Resilient Built Environment under the New EU Policy Framework (EPBD, EED and RED)”

During the Special Session, ParisFokaides presents the abstract: Digital Transformation of Building Inspections and Energy Audits through LiDAR-Based 3D Reality Capture”

The research assesses the extent to which digital reality-capture approaches can improve the speed, consistency, and accuracy of data collection compared with conventional practices, while also examining post-processing demands,  implementation constraints, and barriers to practical adoption.

The results demonstrate that digitally captured spatial data can strengthen building documentation, support more reliable geometric assessment, and provide a stronger foundation for digital-ready audit workflows. However, successful deployment depends on the balance between automation, data usability, required expertise, and compatibility with broader assessment and modelling processes.

Special Session seeks to stimulate multidisciplinary discussion on innovative solutions for building design, retrofit, and operation, with contributions spanning advanced envelopes, low-impact HVAC systems, passive and hybrid cooling, smart controls, renewable integration, and policy-driven assessment methods across building, district, and urban scales, with particular emphasis on retrofit strategies, climate adaptation, urban overheating mitigation, and socially inclusive pathways to decarbonization.
