The SRI – from an experimental to a regulatory instrument

Explore the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), introduced by the EPBD in 2018, through R2M Solution's REHVA Journal analysis. Discover insights from the initial testing phase and expectations for national-level trials.
sri ARTICLE

The Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) is an assessment methodology launched by the European Commission and expected to become mandatory for large buildings in 2027 under the EPBD recast. It provides an approach, methodology, and results to discuss building smartness as it relates to building performance, occupant comfort, and grid readiness.

The SRI assesses a building’s smartness across several building domains, such as heating, cooling, domestic hot water, ventilation, lighting, dynamic building envelope, electricity, EV charging, and monitoring and control, ensuring that buildings meet the EU’s energy efficiency and smart technology standards.

Evaluating the SRI Testing

The SRI is currently being tested in half of the EU countries. The European Commission’s webpage on the SRI provides the most up-to-date information about the national test phases and training materials available in national languages. Relevant information can also be found on the SRI Observatory.

In the REHVA Journal article,  Sophie Dourlens-Quaranta, Régis Decorme, managing Partners of R2M Solution France, and Cécile Barrère, EU Project Manager and Business Developer R2M Solution France, presented the results of the first testing phase from the point of views of

  • Building owners
  • Smart Building professionals

Larger-scale test phases

For the further development of the SRI, the EU Commission expanded the testing phase with the support of several LIFE Programme projects. Among these supporting projects, SmarterEPC was mentioned as a pivotal project to integrate EPCs and SRI, both expected to be used by assessors.
